The Adaptive Transient Hough method for long-duration gravitational wave transients

This paper describes a new semi-coherent method to search for transient gravitational waves of intermediate duration (hours to days). In order to search for newborn isolated neutron stars with their possibly very rapid spin-down, we model the frequency evolution as a power law. The search uses short Fourier transforms from the output of ground-based gravitational wave detectors and applies a weighted Hough transform, also taking into account the signal's amplitude evolution. We present the technical details for implementing the algorithm, its statistical properties, and a sensitivity estimate. A first example application of this method was in the search for GW170817 post-merger signals, and we verify the estimated sensitivity with simulated signals for this case.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figure

Lecciones del grupo antiglobalización Tute Bianche sobre la desobediencia civil digital y el sujeto “revolucionario”

This paper is part of the investigation into the possibility of using the concept of civil disobedience to analyze the online disclosure of secret documentation or “eleaking”, that is, the ethical and electronic leak of confidential information. While other works have already summarized the legitimacy requirements of disobedience, here we study the possi-ble parallelisms between eleaking and another unprecedented form of civil disobedience, carried out by the Italian collective Tute Bianche. By ignoring the identity of its agents, the bianca disobedience would also be groundbreaking and problematic with respect to the dominant liberal definition. Thus, a crucial and not enough examined role of civil disobe-dience is claimed: its visibilization of both injustices and exclusions systematically caused by today’s neo-liberal capitalism. The experience of the aforementioned anti-globalization movement offers a double teaching. On the one hand, it demands a more complex rein-terpretation of publicity, a classic condition of validity, with the consequent clarification of the normative arguments that have been previously used to defend eleaking. Second, the bianca strategy also arises as a consequence of the eventual crisis of the categories that should represent and promote democratic social change. In short, once again social praxis allows a (self) criticism of the hegemonic theory of both civil disobedience and the subjec-tivities of emancipation.Este texto se enmarca en la investigación sobre la posibilidad de usar el concep-to de desobediencia civil para analizar la revelación online de documentación secreta o “efiltración”, es decir, la filtración ética y electrónica de información confidencial. Mientras que en otros trabajos ya se han resumido los requisitos de legitimidad de la desobediencia, aquí se estudian los eventuales paralelismos entre la efiltración y otra forma inédita de desobediencia civil, protagonizada por el colectivo italiano Tute Bianche. Al desconocer la identidad de sus agentes, la desobediencia bianca también sería rupturista y problemática respecto de la definición liberal dominante. Se reivindica así una función crucial y poco atendida de la desobediencia civil: su visibilización tanto de injusticias como de exclusiones provocadas sistemáticamente por el capitalismo neoliberal actual. La experiencia del mo-vimiento antiglobalización citado ofrece una doble enseñanza. Por un lado, exige una rein-terpretación más compleja de la publicidad, una condición clásica de validez, con la conse-cuente matización de los argumentos normativos que se han usado previamente para defender la efiltración. En segundo lugar, la estrategia bianca surge también como conse-cuencia de la eventual crisis de las categorías que debían representar e impulsar el cambio social democrático. En definitiva, una vez más la praxis social permite una (auto)crítica de la teoría hegemónica tanto de la desobediencia civil como de las subjetividades de la eman-cipación

WikiLeaks under fire: Is it electronic civil disobedience?

This paper evaluates the usefulness of the civil disobedience theory to legitimate the e-leaking of secrets, i.e. ethical and electronic disclosure of confidential information. First, the main definitions of offline civil disobedience are reviewed. Liberalism established the dominant set of validity conditions: symbolic, peaceful, responsible, public, constitutionally loyal, etc. We criticize this standpoint thanks to the discursive approach, but also highlighting its prejudices. Second, we analyse whether WikiLeaks meets those classical requirements. Encrypted anonymity, partial decriminalization and limited irresponsibility become acceptable. A Study of the effects of automation on labour

Treballs Finals del Màster d'Economia, Facultat d'Economia i Empresa, Universitat de Barcelona, Curs: 2019-2020, Tutor: Marc TeignierI develop a task-based model to study the effects of automation on labour demand. I differentiate two kinds of technological innovations: those that allow machines to replace labour in more tasks, and those that entail an improved version of a previous machine. Aggregate output is produced combining complementary tasks. Innovations improving previous machines are always beneficial for workers, since they just have a productivity effect. On contrast, innovations extending automation to more tasks, besides of a productivity effect, have a displacement effect. I find that if tasks are complementary enough then, no matter how productive the new machines are, an extension of automation to more tasks will always decrease wages. Then, motivated by the importance of this productivity effect, I incorporate a second final good to my baseline model. For the case of Leontief preferences, I find that if the second good is sufficiently capital intensive, then the effects of automation on labour are worsened

Análisis del Comportamiento Dinámico de los Diques de Baja Cota de Coronación

Los diques de Baja Cota de Coronación constituyen una prometedora alternativa como barrera parcial para ciertas aplicaciones en Ingeniería de Costas. Poseen algunas ventajas potenciales frente a estructuras más convencionales, pero su diseño funcional es complicado por la gran cantidad de variables que intervienen, y por la complejidad de los procesos hidro-morfodinámicos que toman parte, siendo su impacto y funcionalidad difícil de prever. En este texto se realiza primeramente una revisión del estado del arte, y a continuación se estudian, mediante simulación numérica y análisis de datos experimentales en un modelo físico, los diferentes procesos que tienen lugar en torno a estructuras de baja cota de coronación con diferente grado de francobordo y ancho de coronación, y bajo diferentes condiciones de clima de oleaje. Además se caracteriza dinámicamente la implicación de estos procesos en el impacto morfológico en la playa

¿Cómo interpretar que EEUU suplique a «WikiLeaks» que no publique más información secreta?1

En primer lugar, la presente comunicación describe brevemente un suceso un tanto insólito: el que una página web haya puesto en jaque al considerado gobierno nacional más poderoso del mundo. En segundo lugar, se ofrece una posible perspectiva teórica para interpretar tal acontecimiento: la teoría de la opinión pública, principalmente desde su articulación en el seno de la Teoría Crítica de Jürgen Habermas. En tercer lugar, se evalúan someramente las luces y las sombras tanto de WikiLeaks como de Habermas mediante la comparación crítica. En general, este trabajo se propone iniciar el análisis de las potencialidades de internet como herramienta y espacio en favor de la democracia y la emancipación de una ciudadanía participativa y no encerrada en sus clásicos límites estatales.The purpose of this paper is to make a brief description of a somewhat unusual event: the creation of a website that has challenged one of the considered most powerful national governments in the world. Secondly, a possible theoretical approach to interpret such event will be provided: the theory of public opinion, especially from Jürgen Habermas’ articulation within the Critical Theory. Thirdly, the lights and shadows of WikiLeaks as well as Habermas’ theory will be assessed by means of a critical comparison. Overall, this paper intends to initiate the analysis of the potential of internet as a tool and space for democracy as well as for the emancipation of participatory citizenship and not locked in its traditional state boundaries

Cinquanta anys d’investigació educativa a les Illes Balears (1956-2005): una aproximació bibliomètrica

En aquest article presentam una anàlisi bibliomètrica sobre les tesis doctorals i els treballs de recerca especialitzats en educació fets per investigadors de les Illes Balears o que s’hi han vinculat. S’analitzen quantitativament les 100 tesis doctorals defensades públicament entre els anys 1956, data de la primera tesi localitzada, i l’any 2005. També s’analitzen 1.820 recerques educatives d’impacte territorial —per àmbits científics i per descriptors— fets per investigadors de les illes siguin o no doctors. Finalment, s’inclou un llistat amb les dades bàsiques de les 100 tesis doctorals analitzades.En este artículo presentamos un análisis bibliométrico sobre las tesis doctorales y los trabajos de investigación especializados en educación realizados por investigadores de las Islas Baleares o vinculados a ellas. Se analizan cuantitativamente las 100 tesis doctorales defendidas públicamente entre los años 1956, fecha de la primera tesis localizada, y el año 2005.También se analizan 1.820 investigaciones de impacto territorial —por ámbitos científicos y por descriptores— realizadas por investigadores de las islas sean o no doctores. Finalmente, se incluye un listado con los datos básicos de las 100 tesis doctorales analizadas
